Lanzarote with kids

Lanzarote looks like another planet, and that is exactly what makes it great for children: colourful volcanoes, black lava fields, caves you walk through underground and white houses shaped by the artist César Manrique, who treated the whole island as a work of art. Everything is less than an hour’s drive away, and the whole island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993.

Things to do

  • Timanfaya National Park: the Route of the Volcanoes by coach and geothermal demonstrations — tickets online only, free for under-7s.
  • Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes: volcanic tubes transformed into magical spaces (no pushchairs — bring a baby carrier).
  • Jardín de Cactus: almost 500 species of cactus in a former quarry.
  • Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park: animals, shows and a water area with slides.
  • Submarine Safaris from Puerto Calero, diving to 25–30 metres (not for children under 2).

Best beaches for kids

Playa Flamingo and Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca, Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen and Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise are the most comfortable. The coves of Papagayo are beautiful, reached by a paid dirt track. Famara, on the other hand, has strong currents and is not for swimming with children.

Tips for parents

  • Wind is part of Lanzarote: pack a light windbreaker and a beach shelter.
  • Go early to Timanfaya to avoid queues.
  • The Cabildo’s art centres have family-friendly restaurants with high chairs and children’s menus.
